Rihanna vows not to use trans models as ‘convenient’ marketing ploy

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty makeup line is killing it this year. Time Magazine even called it one of 2017’s best inventions. The line focuses on creating shades for people of all colors, from Black to albino, which means its models are more diverse than your standard beauty line. But one fan begged the question—where’s the transgender women in Fenty Beauty’s marketing?

Brazilian fan Alberto Otero reached out to Rihanna over Twitter’s DMs, saying that the next time she has something to record, she should “invite a trans girl to the group.” The message caught Rihanna’s eye, and by the next day, she responded by criticizing the fashion world’s obsession with token transgender models.

“I don’t think it’s fair that a trans woman, or man, be used as a convenient marketing tool!” the singer-entrepreneur told Otero. “Too often do I see companies doing this to trans and black women alike! There’s always just the one spot in the campaign for the token, ‘we look mad diverse’ girl/guy! It’s sad!”

Rihanna’s response, which was confirmed by BBC News, quickly went viral. In short, Rihanna is calling out an ongoing trend embraced by brands like H&M and L’Oreal, where trans models are used for flashy headlines and not much else. In the latter’s case, L’Oreal even fired its first trans model Munroe Bergdorf after she said “all white people” are racist.

So it goes without saying that trans women across Twitter praised the Bad Girl for embracing trans people and encouraging the industry to cast them inclusively.

But others are pointing out that Fenty Beauty should do more. While it’s important to avoid tokenizing trans women, trans visibility is vital. In other words, there’s a major difference between throwing a trans woman up on marketing posters for personal gain and making room for trans women because trans women exist.

Either way, many agree that Rihanna’s response is a great take that shines light on an important issue. Marginalized people are regularly tokenized, and visible people in the fashion and beauty industry have a responsibility to call out its problems.

Fashion itself still remains incredibly biased toward thin white cis women and men, with transgender people practically missing and women of color rarely appearing in marketing, according to a mid-2016 survey. Rihanna gets that fashion should be for everyone, but some brands still have a lot of catching up to do.

Family demands body cam footage of teenager beat by Alabama police

BTW

The family of a 17-year-old boy who was reportedly beaten by police officers in Troy, Alabama, is demanding answers and body camera footage of the encounter.

Ulysses “Fatdaddy” Wilkerson, 17, was brutally beaten by police officers on Saturday, according to his mother. The Troy Messenger reports that Troy police said they used “reasonable and necessary force” to apprehend Wilkerson.

Wilkerson’s mother posted a Facebook photo showing her son’s bruised and beaten face, saying the Troy police officers were responsible.

“Troy police officers did this to my son while he was in handcuffs,” Angela Williams wrote.

The photo has since circulated the internet, with many activists calling for justice and requesting the release of body cam footage.

Posted by Angela Williams on Sunday, December 24, 2017

Police said they observed Wilkerson walking out from behind a closed business Saturday night. The officers said when they tried to approach Wilkerson, he fled on foot, and they then pursued him on foot.

Police said they were able to apprehend Wilkerson but that he resisted arrest and refused to comply with commands.

“The subject continued to struggle with officers and kept reaching toward his waistband as if he was attempting to access a weapon, all while repeatedly ignoring officers’ commands to stop resisting and give them his hands,” Police Chief Randall Barr said.

Barr said because of this, the officers resorted to using physical force.

After officers retraced the pursuit path, a handgun lying on the ground was found and has been taken in as evidence. Wilkerson was charged with obstructing governmental operations and resisting arrest, the Messenger reported. The family said the charges were later dropped, according to WDHN.

Wilkerson was reportedly taken to Troy Regional Medical Center and then to the University of Alabama Birmingham hospital. He was released Sunday.

Wilkerson’s father told WDHN “he had trauma to the brain, swelling on the brain, and a cracked eye socket in three different places.”

Black Lives Matter Birmingham has organized a protest for Saturday, Dec. 30 at 11am CT in Troy.

“There comes a time when silence is not an option,” the organization wrote on its Facebook page, calling for justice for Wilkerson.

VOTE: Armie Hammer Apologizes To Casey Affleck But Does Affleck Deserve It??

Sponsored by  FreePLRArticles.biz

Even before he was being called a beneficiary of white privilege in an article that eventually led him to delete his Twitter account, Armie Hammer was courting controversy.

In one interview, he spoke about the unfair "double standard" in how his Birth Of A Nation director Nate Parker and Manchester By The Sea star Casey Affleck were treated by the media and the industry.

With Nate in "director's jail" and Casey having a Best Actor Oscar on his shelf, it's easy to see his point.

Video: Timothee Chalamet Calls His Sexual Chemistry With Armie The 'Random Luck Of The Universe'

However, the two men were accused of very different things as Armie took the time to explain in a lengthy apology to Affleck for the comparison.

The Call Me By Your Name star released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, where his original interview appeared, saying:

"I would like to sincerely apologize to Casey and his family for my recent comments about him in my THR interview. Without knowing the facts about the civil lawsuits at issue (which I now understand were settled), I misspoke. I conflated sexual harassment cases with a criminal case involving sexual assault charges.

The cases in which Casey was involved were not criminal and instead involved civil claims from his 2010 movie I'm Still Here. While intending to make a social comment about double standards in general, I mistakenly compared reports of prior, public civil allegations that never proceeded to trial with a criminal case that was fully tried. I understand now that this was a poor comparison, which I deeply regret making."

There definitely is a difference between the two charges, and the way they were resolved.

However, does that mean the observation of the double standard was incorrect? Yes, considering the charges were different, one would certainly expect Parker and Affleck to suffer proportional levels of public admonishment.

But that isn't what happened. One got denounced, the other was given the biggest honor in Hollywood.

We guess what we're asking is, do YOU think Casey Affleck deserved this apology??

Bitcoin Dips Below $14,000 as South Korea Eyes Fresh Regulations

Sponsored by  our friends from Met001.biz
=>

Bitcoin resumed its slide Thursday, dipping below $14,000 as the cryptocurrency’s dizzying drop from a record set 10 days ago intensified.

The latest blow to the world’s biggest cryptocurrency came from South Korea, where the government said it was eyeing options for stamping out a frenzy of speculation, including a potential shutdown of at least some exchanges.

Bitcoin fell as much as 11 percent to as low as $13,500 as of 2:02 p.m. in New York, erasing modest gains after the South Korean release, composite Bloomberg pricing shows. It’s now down 30 percent from the record $19,511 it reached on Dec. 18.

Bitcoin’s plunge comes after futures contracts started trading on CME Group’s exchange, giving investors new ways to bet on the digital coin’s price moves. The news from South Korea unnerved traders because the country has been ground zero for a global surge in interest in bitcoin as its rally this year reached 1,600 percent, prompting the nation’s prime minister to worry over the impact on Korean youth.

While there’s no indication Asia’s No. 4 economy will shutter exchanges that have accounted by some measures for more than a fifth of global trading, the news is a warning as regulators express concerns about private digital currencies. South Korea will require real-name cryptocurrency transactions and impose a ban on the offering of virtual accounts by banks to crypto-exchanges, according to a statement from the Office for Government Policy Coordination.

Bitcoin was trading at about a 30 percent premium over prevailing international rates on Thursday in Seoul, according to price data from local exchanges, a continuing sign of the country’s obsession, and the difficulty in arbitraging between markets.

“Cryptocurrency speculation has been irrationally overheated in Korea,” the government said in the statement, which comes little more than a week after the bankruptcy filing of one South Korean exchange. “The government can’t leave the abnormal situation of speculation any longer.”

Singapore’s monetary authority warned last week that digital currency buyers should be aware they could lose all their money, joining counterparts who’ve warned about speculative mania surrounding bitcoin, which has surged more than 1,300 percent this year even after today’s selloff.

“Regulators are getting so concerned that this is primarily and predominantly a retail phenomenon,” said Stephen Innes, head of trading for Asia Pacific at Oanda. “Regulators not only in Asia but globally are going to start addressing this fact because I don’t think they’ve actually come to terms with what the absolute downside of a complete drop in crypto means for the economy.”

The Ten Worst Things Scott Pruitts EPA Has Already Done

Sponsored by  SmartQuotes - Your daily smart quote
    =>

No part of the government has been untouched by the Trump revolution. Multiple Cabinet departments are headed by people opposed to their core missions, the judiciary is being transformed at an unprecedented rate, and thanks to the new tax cut, even the sacred cows of Medicare and Social Security are now in line for legislative slaughter.

But nowhere is the takeover clearer than at the Environmental Protection Agency, now headed by Scott Pruitt, who made his name suing the watchdog on behalf of fossil-fuel interests. In one year, Pruitt has destroyed the foundations of the agency, firing scientists and replacing them with industry lobbyists; undoing critical regulations that protect our air and water; and favoring industry interests over public health.

The trajectory is clear: Prioritize polluters freedom over personal freedom, health, and environmental protection. Here are the top 10 worst actions Pruitts EPA has taken in 2017:

    10. Corruption

Pruitt is probably the most suspect member of the Trump administration, which is saying a lot. At his confirmation, he lied to Congress (a felony) about his private email account, which he used for communicating with industry representatives. When he served as Oklahomas attorney general, Pruitt was discovered to have simply cut and pasted a letter written by oil giant Devon Energy onto his own stationery.

And then theres the money. Since taking office, Pruitt racked up $58,000 in taxpayer-paid travel bills for flights to and from Oklahoma (where he is rumored to be mulling a Senate run in 2020), often on the flimsiest of pretexts. The EPAs inspector general is investigating.

Pruitt also spent $40,000 of taxpayer money to fly to Morocco to promote fossil fuels. (How that counts as environmental protection is anyones guess.) And he retained a shady PR firm that has previously done opposition research on journalists, at the cost to taxpayers of $120,000a contract voided when the news of it broke.

    9. Slashing the Budget to Tidbits

The EPA is, in large part, a law-enforcement agency. Yet can you imagine any other law-enforcement department slashing its budget by more than 30 percent in one year? The result is a deliberate anarchy as polluters know the EPA cant (and doesnt want to) do its job. Enforcement actions have dropped by more than 30 percent from Obama administration levels, and more than 20 percent from George W. Bush levels. Demands that polluting factories clean up their act have plummeted nearly 90 percent. The cops are just not walking the beat.

For example, Superfund enforcementi.e., making polluters pay for cleaning up the toxic messes theyve madehas been cut 37 percent, causing many cleanups to simply stop altogether (PDF). In 2017 alone, programs that have been completely eliminated include those that reduce radon in schools, control runoff pollution from roads, and certify lead-paint-removal contractors, among many others. And thats by design: Candidate Trump promised to eliminate all of the EPA, leaving only tidbits. Pruitt is his hatchet man. But even these budget cuts dont include the largest shrinking of the agency...

    8. Hollowing Out the Agency

Its not just EPAs budget being cutits the agency itself. More than 700 employees have left or been forced out. Thats just the beginning: Congress is set to appropriate $60 million to buy out the contracts of EPA staff, whose positions will be eliminated. Many high-level enforcement jobs remain vacant.

Other key posts have been filled by former industry shills, like Nancy Beck, a chemical-industry lobbyist whos now ostensibly in charge of regulating toxic chemicals. Whistleblowers have reported a culture of fear and suspicion, with longtime staffers assumed to be disloyal to the new regime.

Elgie Holstein, senior director for strategic planning at Environmental Defense Fund, told The Daily Beast these cuts are motivated not by budgetary concerns but by opposition to the EPAs core mission. Its easy to think of it as reducing bureaucracy, Holstein said, but when you consider the fact that EPA is such a small agency to begin with, with a budget thats basically what it was in the 1970s (adjusted for inflation), its pretty clear that further reductions in staff is all part of a strategy to undermine and hollow out EPA as an effective public health agency.

    7. Disaster Failure

One of the most stark examples of the EPAs incapacity came after Hurricane Harvey, when the unfolding storm disaster caused factories to release nearly 6 million pounds of pollution into the air. The EPA was slow to respond, but quick to issue a press release congratulating itself. In one case, a chemical plant exploded, triggering evacuations, and the EPA was found to have simply not shown up at the scene until after the explosion happened.

By coincidence, the EPA had just withdrawn the Chemical Disaster Rule, which would require companies to disclose which hazardous materials they had on site. That withdrawal didnt affect the Houston response, but it indicated that the next such disaster might be even worse; the EPA is not a disaster-response agencyits value comes from monitoring risks over the long term, which now it wont do as efficiently.

This will only get worse. Global climate disruption has already increased the frequency of extreme weather events. If the EPAs budget is slashed by a third, and if climate change is not allowed to be spoken of, let alone factored into risk analysis and resource allocation, Harvey is just a tiny taste of what is to come.

    6. Secrecy

You wouldnt know the EPA is a public agency from Pruitts unprecedented secrecy. He has demanded that employees not take notes at meetings with him, ordered a denial of Freedom of Information Act requests, and implemented gag rules that ban staffers from talking about a host of environmental issues. Until pressured, he refused to release his meeting calendarnot surprisingly, given what it reveals (see No. 5).

And once again, theres the enormous waste of money. Pruitt has retained his own round-the-clock security detail, costing taxpayers $830,000. No EPA administrator has ever done that. He also installed a secure phone booth in his own office for $33,000, and special locks that cost $6,000.

The reason for all this secrecy is obvious

    5. The EPA Is Now an Industry Puppet

As he did in Oklahoma, Scott Pruitt is taking his orders from the polluters hes meant to regulate. The New York Times recently tracked who Pruitt met with on a single day, April 26: top executives from a coal-burning utility, the board of a huge coal-mining company, and lobbyists from General Motors. No environmental or public health groups.

The remainder of the six-month period the Times examined was similar: chemical manufacturers, Shell Oil, truck manufacturers, the National Mining Association, Oklahoma oil lobbyists; not to mention the Koch brothers-funded American Legislative Exchange Council and CropLife America, a trade association run by pesticide manufacturers.

The effects of these close contacts have been obvious.Sometimes, theyve been plums handed out to specific companies, like the aforementioned Devon Energy, which had agreed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in penalties for illegally emitting 80 tons of toxic pollution each yearuntil Pruitt simply voided the settlement and let it go with a slap on the wrist.

More often, the effects are far broader...

    4. Regulatory Rollback

Pruitts EPA has eliminated regulations that:

    • Verified emissions from a companys industrial expansion are what the company says they are. (Now the EPA will simply take estimates at face value.) (PDF)
    • Blocked a potentially disastrous mining operation in Alaskas Bristol Bay. (The mine will now go forward, though a single leak could devastate the worlds largest sockeye salmon population.)
    • Required the tracking of methane emissions (this decision was overturned by the Supreme Court).
    • Required data collection of emissions from oil and gas companies.
    • Monitored fracking.
    • Required companies to disclose which hazardous chemicals theyre storing.
    • Protected tributaries of sensitive bodies of water (even though the EPAs analysis showed it would cost less to prevent the pollution than to allow it). (PDF)
    • Set tighter emissions standards for trucks.
    • Banned the toxic pesticide chlorpyrifos.

Still under rollback review are restrictions on smog, coal ash, mining waste, mercury, and benzene pollution. Even the popular Energy Star appliance certification program has been slated for reduction.

    3. The Clean Power Plan

Power plants account for approximately 35 percent of U.S. carbon emissions. Without tackling power plants, you cant address climate change. And without unified federal action, you cant address power plants.

The Clean Power Plan was born on Aug. 3, 2015, when it was finalized by President Obamas EPA, and it died on March 28, 2017, when President Trump called for a review. To no ones surprise, in October, the EPA recommended a total repeal.

Its hard to overestimate how important and game-changing the Clean Power Plan was. It called for a 32 percent reduction in power-plant carbon emissions by 2030. It offered incentives for investment in renewable energy, creating thousands of jobs. It set state-by-state targets that took into account each states unique needs. And now its dead.

    2. The War on Science

In the era of alternative facts, its no surprise that science, the scientific method, and scientists have all come under attack at Pruitts EPA.

To take one example, Pruitts climate denialism (more on this later) defies the unanimous consent of the scientific community, choosing the fake science of fake think tanks like the Heartland Institute, which regularly churns out bogus scientific reports to create the perception that there is significant disagreement about climate change.

Another example was Pruitts decision that scientists who have received EPA funding within three years can no longer serve on the agencys 12 scientific advisory committees. While that may sound like a smart conflict-of-interest provision, its actual effect will be to exclude the majority of scientific experts from serving on the committees, and to replace them with industry experts instead.

For good measure, Pruitt has also defied economics as well. In fact, renewable energy generates more jobs than fossil fuel energy, but Pruitt endlessly repeats the lie that regulatory rollbacks are needed to save jobs.

All this has happened away from the spotlight. To the average person, said Holstein, the EPA seems like a murky government agency and nobody really knows how it works. But everyone who is familiar with it knows that its science and technology capabilities are at the heart of its success in protecting all of us from pollution.

    1. Climate Change Denial

Finally, in terms of real-world consequences, theres nothing that tops climate change. The World Health Organization estimates that 250,000 people will die each year between 2030-2050 from factors directly attributable to climate change. That doesnt even count the mass migration crises that rising sea levels and changing crop zones will bring about. There is full scientific consensus that human emissions are warming the planet; over a five-year period, 928 peer-reviewed articles affirmed this fact, while zero opposed it.

Pruitt has stuck the EPAs head in the scientific sand. The phrase climate change has been erased from the agency website. Any offices working on climate change have been closed or reassigned. Pruitt has even created a blacklist of EPA employees who had worked or published on the issue. Meanwhile, Pruitt claims to have advised Trump to withdraw from the Paris accord on climate change, which he did, even though the rest of the world has signed it and is moving forward without the U.S.

Nor is Pruitt alone. His chief of staff, Ryan Jackson, was previously the chief for Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe, who calls climate change a hoax. Pruitt has also hired Inhofe aide Byron Brown to serve as his deputy.

Pruitt has gotten in a little trouble for these actions. After stating on CNBC that I would not agree that [carbon dioxide] is a primary contributor to the global warming that we see, the EPA inspector general referred the matter to the EPAs scientific integrity officer, Francesca Grifo, since EPA officials are required to reflect scientific consensus in their comments. (In response, a right-wing group demanded an investigation of Grifo.)

But theres little that can stop Pruitts anti-science crusade, absent congressional action, which, with the present Congress, seems highly unlikely. After going through some of this litany with the EDFs Holstein, I asked him if there was anything that any of us could or should do.

Holstein said the most important actions to watch for in 2018 may be in the obscure realms of budget cuts and regional office closures. There are also a lot of things well be looking at in terms of whether administration will lower the hurdle for pollutants, reduce enforcement at EPA and at the Justice Department, and try to dial the budget down at NOAA [the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which often studies climate change] and other science agencies.

When I asked if there was any hope, given the awful news from 2017, Holstein took the long view. What I say to people who want to give up is: Dont do it, he said. We have built over the last 40 to 50 years a bipartisan national legacy of bedrock environmental protections and safeguards and we should fight for them. The fact that President Trump and Administrator Pruitt would like to help polluters avoid responsibility doesnt change one bit the fact that we have nearly a half century of national and public commitment to a cleaner environment and healthier communities.

Besides, Holstein added, we have a great deal at stake.

The Republicans Are What We Thought They Were

Youre surprised at Bob Corker? Really? Please. Yes, hes a deficit hawk. And hes a senator who has, from time to time, made some effort to work in a bipartisan fashion.

But come on. Hes a Republican. He likes tax cuts. He believes, as they all do, in supply-side economic theory. And he has donors and constituents in Tennessee who wanted this. See what he said in defending his switch from no to yes on the GOP tax bill: He changed because of many conversations over the past several days with individuals from both sides of the aisle across Tennessee and around the country. In other words, rich people.

Besides, hes not going to buck the team. Not on something like this. Theres a history here. Read Robert Kaisers great book Act of Congress, about how the Dodd-Frank bill became law. Corker was working with Chris Dodd. In absolute good faith! But Corker couldntor wouldntbring any other GOP senators along with him. A crucial defection, incidentally, was Richard Shelby, whom were praising this week for helping to save us from Sen. Roy Moore. Corker ultimately voted against it.

Marco Rubio? That was a joke from the start. He seems to have gotten a portion of what he wanted on the child tax credit. Rubio called the changed that leadership agreed to a solid step. We all know what words like that mean. They mean: Well, it kinda sucks, but its enough for me to save face, especially with Americans for Tax Reform and Club for Growth and all these other people threatening to find someone to primary my ass if I vote no.

Like the coach said, the Republicans are who we thought they were. So its done. Or is going to be. As I wrote in The New York Times Friday, its the second most unpopular piece of major domestic legislation of the last 27 years. The first most unpopular? The attempt to repeal Obamacare earlier this year. Nice work, 115th Congress!

You think this is bad, think about whats next. Whats next are cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and other domestic spending programs. Because this is the Republican formula:

    1. Pass massive tax cuts for the top 1 percent.

    2. Run up the deficit.

    3. A year or two later go, Oh my God, look at the deficit! This proves that spending is just out of control!

    4. Start taking the axe to entitlement programs and the domestic discretionary budget.

Thats how it works, ever since supply-side became part of conversation. Ronald Reagan cut taxes and ran up deficits like mad, tripling, quadrupling them over Jimmy Carters level. George H.W. Bush raised taxes a little, but the economy was so in the doldrums that the deficit was still bad. Along came Bill Clinton, who had to fix it. He raised taxes. He did investments. He got the economy humming. He eliminated the deficit. Gave George W. Bush a surplus.

Then Dubya cut taxes. Twice. And started two unfunded-mandate wars. Up shot the deficit again. Ach, they all said! These deficits. We must cut spending. And bring Social Security under control. But they never did cut spending, and popular will against Bushs Social Security privatization scheme was so strong that that one died on the vine fast. Meanwhile they turned the banking system into a casino, and that crashed.

Then came Barack Obama, who, again, had to fix it. He wasnt able to, quite enough, because his stimulus package should have been much larger than political realities allowed. But he did reduce the deficit substantially. As a percentage of GDP, it went from the 10 percent Bush handed him to around 2.5 percent. And he oversaw 75 consecutive months of job growth. He handed Donald Trump exactly the economy that 14 months ago Trump was saying was a disaster but now is saying is beautiful.

Thats the cycle, folks. Thats how it works. And now, thanks to the GOP, were about to open another gash in the deficit. Theyll try to slash away, but I hope and think that by and large they wont succeed, because if you thought this tax bill was unpopular, wait till you see what happens when they start openly talking about tinkering with peoples nursing home care (Medicaid), prescription drug benefits (Medicare), and fixed pension distributions (Social Security).

And so a Democrat may well get elected in 2021, inheriting a mess from Trump. A deficit. Maybe a bad economy. And it will be on the Democrat to fix it again. And he or she will. But only to a point. The Republicans, then in opposition, will obstruct and not allow the next Democrat to really fix things, because Republicans will know deep down that public investment would fix the economy, but theyll rail against it on the grounds that it will increase the deficit! So they will try to engineer things so that the recovery is tepid, so they can get the Democrat out and cut taxes for the rich one more time and balloon the deficit and start the whole grim process again.

Thats the game. It feels like were fated to play it for the next 50 years.

Theres one way out. The next time the Democrats are in power, they need to really turn the tables on tax reform. Not nip and tuck, but really fundamentally do something different. This isnt the place for all the details. Maybe some future columns. But that will be the only way to break the pattern. They cant do anything about what Congress is about to do. But they can smash the glass next time they have the hammer, and theyd better do it.

Appeals court rules against homophobic bakers who turned away lesbian couple

    BTW

Aaron and Melissa Klein previously ran Sweet Cakes by Melissa, an Oregon cake shop that once refused to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. In 2015, the Oregon Bureau of Labor imposed a $135,000 fine on the Kleins for discriminating against the women’s sexual orientation, but the bakers proceeded to appeal the decision. Now, the Kleins have lost that appeal, with the Oregon Court of Appeals concluding that they must pay the fine.

It all began in 2013 when lesbian couple Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer came to Sweet Cakes in order to receive a wedding cake for their ceremony. The two were turned away, but under the 2007 Oregon Equality Act, private businesses cannot discriminate against customers based on their sexuality or gender identity. The appeal essentially tested that law—and the courts ruled in the Bowman-Cryer’s favor. In a statement obtained by KPTV, the couple praised the court’s ruling and insisted that it proves “discrimination has no place in America.”

“Without this ruling, businesses could determine who they serve,” the two women wrote to KPTV. “Granting a business like Sweet Cakes a right to turn away customers in violation of nondiscrimination laws would create a sweeping license to discriminate and have far-reaching, damaging consequences.”

The Klein’s appeal mirrors an ongoing Supreme Court case between Colorado baker Jack Phillips and a Massachusetts gay couple. Phillips refused to bake a wedding cake for the two men, citing his right to free speech under religious freedom. LGBTQ activists fear the case could overturn multiple anti-discrimination laws on the state and local level if the Supreme Court sides with Phillips, giving conservatives the opportunity to deny goods and services to queer and transgender Americans under religious grounds.

China to Overtake U.S. Economy by 2032 as Asian Might Builds

The growing importance of Asia’s major economies will continue in 2018 and beyond, according to a league table that sees the region dominating in terms of size in just over a decade.

The report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research in London sees India leapfrogging the U.K. and France next year to become the world’s fifth-biggest economy in dollar terms. It will advance to third place by 2027, moving ahead of Germany.

In 2032, three of the four largest economies will be Asian -- China, India and Japan -- and, by that time, China will also have overtaken the U.S. to hold the No. 1 spot. India’s advance won’t stop there, according to the CEBR, which sees it taking the top place in the second half of the century.

Also by 2032, South Korea and Indonesia will have entered the top 10, supplanting the Group of Seven nations of Italy and Canada.

How Email Open Tracking Quietly Took Over the Web

The Ten Worst Things Scott Pruitts EPA Has Already Done

      Sponsored by  FreePLRArticles.biz
      =>

Model Paulina Porizkova Says Sexual Harassment Was Once ‘Seen As A Compliment’

Times have changed… or have they?

Last week, Paulina Porizkova — who appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue from 1984-85 — spoke to Page Six at the Bloomberg 50 gala in NYC about the harassment models face in the fashion industry.

Related: Paulina Porizkova Talks About Her Struggles With Anxiety

Apparently, this behavior is so common, it was once seen as a "compliment." The 52-year-old revealed:

"Here is the funny thing about sexual harassment with us as models: It was seen as a compliment."

In fact, Porizkova says being harassed was a sign one was well-liked in the business.

"As a matter of fact, you almost got offended if you did not get harassed. Like, if this photographer is known for hitting on [models] — or goes for all the brunettes — and you show up at the studio and you are a brunette and he does not hit on you.. it is like, 'What is wrong with me?' So it is messed up. It makes you think that sexual harassment is what you need."'

This isn't the first time the Czech-born Swedish runway star has spoken out about predatory behavior. In the 2012 HBO documentary About Face: Supermodels Then and Now, she said:

"If a 16-year-old is kind of flattered by a man pulling out his penis in front of her, that's kind of noteworthy."

      So, so disturbing…
