Yesterday was a sad day for anyone with a love of theatre, literature or the performing arts. Sam Shepard, one of the veterans of 20th century high-intellectualism passed away at the age of 73.

Whilst the Pulitzer prize-winning playwright may be best known for Chicago, which he penned in his early-twenties, he remains a hulkingfigure in the critique of modern-day America – specifically, in his analysis of the breakdown of the American nuclear family unit. Blessed with a disarmingly handsome face, Shepherd also distinguished himself as an exemplary actor, screenwriter and director. His biggest gift to the world, however, was his near 50 plays. In every piece of work, Shepherd was committed to creating new dialogues to explore our society’s conception of “tradition”. His razor-sharp prose often explored the binaries between past and present, progress and stagnation, as well as the relationships between parental figures and their charges. One need only look at his 1978 Pulitzer prize-winner, Buried Child to understand his stance on how the so-called American Dream disillusioned vast swathes of the population. Certainly, in a world plagued by economic slowdown and the ascension of Donald Trump to president, his withering critique of such edifices is as resonant as ever. Sam Shepard died yesterday following complications from the motor neurone disease ALS. And his passing sent shockwaves around Hollywood. The actor Matthew McConaughey was capturedholding back tears after being informed of the playwright’s death whilst on the red carpet. Matthew McConaughey was captured trying to hold back tears after being informed of his co-star, Sam Shepherd’s passing. The 47-year-old star was in the process of being interviewed on the red carpet during the premiere of Hollywood’s latest fantasy flick, Dark Tower, when a journalist from the Associated Press approached him to ask how he was processing Shepherd’s death. The unfortunate news had clearly not reachedMcConaughey yet as he was startled by the reporter’s question. He appeared spooked as he queried, “Sam Shepard moved on?. In the video, the Wolf of Wall Street actor can be seen clutching his forehead and attempting to hold back tears as he looks away to say, “gosh, damn it”. He then asks the reporter about the cause of death, to which the reporter responds, “I don’t know”. McConaughey starred alongside Shepherd in Jeff Nichols’ film, Mud. The coming-of-age drama which premiered in 2012 featuredMcConaughey as the protagonist, Mud with Shepherd playing the role of Mud’s father figure. Talking to the reporter,McConaughey can be heard saying, Look, Im not going to trivialise that situation, I just heard about it for the first time But I always told Jeff Nichols this, look in Mud, the whole trailer for Mud could be Sam Shepard sitting in that green chair telling the boy about who Mud is. It would be about a two-and-a-half minute trailer, but it would have been really badass. Becoming emotional again, the actor gives the reporter a thumbs up before pointing to the sky and saying,we lost one of the great ones. Great writer, great mind. All right, see you in the next one, Sam. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Sam Shepherd.

Trump Has Now Fired More People In His First 6 Months Than Obama Did In 8 Years

The Trump administration has had a rocky start, and it doesn't appear to be improving. With what feels like weekly staff shakeups plaguing the administration, it begs the question of who will be left bywinter vacation.

Thus far, by our count, President Donald Trump has already fired more peoplethan Barack Obama did in his eight years in office. To be clear, the firing count is including only high-profile, unusual cases, not typical turnover that happens during a presidential switch.Let's begin at the beginning of Trump's administration, to make sure we're not missing anyone:

Sally Yates And Michael Flynn

Just nine days into office, Trump fired then-Attorney General Sally Yates when she refused to defend the immigrant ban.

Two weeks went by before another changeup. On Feb. 13,then-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn resigned afterit was discovered that he appeared to havemisled the administration about his contacts with Russian officials regarding sanctions.

Preet Bharara

The following month, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara was fired after refusing to quit, reported. (He was one of 46 other attorneys appointed by former President Barack Obama who got the boot, but we're not including themin the tally because it's been argued that this turnover is somewhat routine.)

James Comey and Angella Reid

Perhaps the most prominent termination came in early May, when Trump fired FBI Director James Comey only the second time in history a president had done so.

At around the same time, the White House dismissed chief usher Angella Reid in an unusual move, reported.

On June 1, Tesla'sElon Musk and Disney's Roger Iger both resignedTrump's advisory council after he announced withdrawing from the Paris climate accord, according to the. And a month later, on July 6, formerdirector of the Office of Government EthicsWalter Shaubresigned, reported.

Resignations In Communications

Later that month, White House Communications Director Mike Dubke put in his resignation in anticipation of more staffing turmoil, CNN reported.

On Friday, July 21, formerPress Secretary Sean Spicer resigned, apparently after learning that Trump had offered Anthony Scaramucci (whoSpicer isno fan of) the job as communications director.

Amidst the communications drama, White House press aide Michael Short resigned on July 25.

Reince Priebus And Anthony Scaramucci

The next week, Trump's team had yet another shakeup. On July 28, Trump announced via Twitter that he wasreplacing Reince Priebus with General John Kellyas chief of staff.

The West Wing had little chance to catch is breath before the firing fairystruck again. On July 31, just 10 days after appointing him White House Communications Director, Trump fired Scaramucci.

This isn't even as far back as the drama goes. In November 2016, Gov. Chris Christie was pushed out in his role on Trump's transition team. This tally also doesn't include routine turnover that a new administration normally executes upon taking office.

As of Aug. 4, the tally comes to six firings and fiveresignations ofmajor roles on Team Trump.

Let's compare this tally to President Obama, whose administration also had some turnover.

In all, it appears thatObama fired only a fewpeople, ABC and RollCall report.Thisdoesn't include another dozen or moreemployees who resigned, stepped down,or were forced to resign, CNN reported. And taken alongsidethose ofTrump's presidency, all of these staff changeshappened overcomparatively routine reasons.

Firings were pretty rare in Obama's administration, with just four major firings in his two terms.

Of those actually dismissed, the list includes Jofi Joseph, Shirley Sherrod, Stanley McChrystal, and, of course, Michael Flynn.

Apples to apples, Trump has already axed more people than his predecessor in one-sixteenth the time.

Withall the shakeups going on, Trump won't be able to go on a hiring spree during the Congressional recess. reports thatSenate has blocked him from making any appointments for the time being, anyway.
