Police have reported that two people have been killed and three more have been seriously injured during a nightclub shooting in the German city of Constance.

A man opened fire at 04:30am on Sunday morning and killed one person in the process. The gunman was then shot and injured by police, and later died in hospital. The attack, which isn’t being treated as a terrorist motivated incident, happened at the Grey club in an industrial part of the city, on Max-Stromeyer-Strasse. A spokesperson for the police confirmed that the gunman was a 34-year-old Iraqi citizen, who was not an asylum seeker. They told N-TV that he is believed to have lived in Germany for a long time before the event occurred. The spokesperson, Fritz Bezikofer, said police had ruled out terrorism, saying: “The motives of the man who acted alone are unclear. We are still investigating but the circumstances surrounding the events at the disco in the evening before the shooting are a bit clearer and this led us to rule out a terrorism background.” It is being reported across many German news outlets that the second person killed was a guest at the club, which is known for its late night partying. Other people at the event were able to save themselves by fleeing through fire escapes or hiding inside the club, police say. Eyewitnesses say that one of the doormen appeared to have been shot by the attacker as he tried to stop him, and it is believed that an automatic weapon was used. A police officer was also wounded during the exchange of fire, however their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or serious. In a statement released by the police and prosecutors, they said that special commando forces and a police helicopter are currently being deployed around the city, as they are currently unsure if the suspect had accomplices and are still unaware of the motive behind the shooting.
