Rebecca Slivinsky was understandably upset when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Her mom went through cancer treatments and subsequently lost her hair.
Rebecca’s mom was diagnosed with cancer just a few months after she left home for graduate school. Rebecca goes to grad school in Georgia, but her mom lives in a small town in Connecticut.
For Christmas, Rebecca went home to visit her family, but instead of giving her mother a traditional Christmas present, she had something even better.
“When I went home for Christmas, I wanted to give her something to let her know she wasn’t alone,” she explained. “As a surprise to my mom, I cut my hair in solidarity with her. Though miles separate us, we will get through this journey together.”
Not only did her mom not expect this kind of gift, she was completely overwhelmed with emotion when she realized what her daughter had done.
Rebecca knew it would be a meaningful moment, so she set up a camera to film the interaction. The video starts with Rebecca standing in the doorway of her mother’s room.
Her mom sits in bed, and willingly closes her eyes. Rebecca comes to sit on the bed and asks her mother to hold out her hands. Her mom obliges, then Rebecca places a red scarf in her hands.
