And it turns out that more physical features make women attractive to men than what we might think! Compiled by Business Insider and Dr. Midge Wilson, Professor of Psychology and Women’s and Gender Studies at DePaul University, these are the physical characteristics that make women attractive to men – and yes, you can change some of them! So if you’re a single lady hoping to be kissed this New Year’s Eve, then you might want to pay close attention to what science has to say about heterosexual attraction…

1. The right waist-to-hip ratio

It’s no secret that hips are for childbearing, and if a woman as the right waist-to-hip ratio, that will instantly make her more attractive. Researchers found that the magic hip-to-waist ratio is 7:10, as women with this number are not only slim, but have good-sized hips for childbearing.

2. A high-pitched voice

Women might be attracted to men with deep voices, and the opposite is true for men. Women with high-pitched voices are viewed as more feminine by men as well as younger. Since the peak female fertility age is between 21 and 30, you can see why men find this attractive. While the first two physical characteristics are impossible to change if you don’t currently possess them, don’t resign yourself to a life of singledom just yet. The next physical characteristics that men find attractive are features that we can all aspire to.

3. Healthy hair

The quality of a person’s hair is often a good indicator of their overall fitness levels. If a woman has long, luscious hair, she will appear not only younger, but more fertile to potential mates. So might be a good idea to invest in quality hair products!

4. Less makeup 

Many women might feel pressured into wearing a lot of makeup to hide their blemishes and imperfections, but this is one department where less definitely is more. Researchers found that women wearing less makeup were thought to be 40 percent more attractive than those wearing more.

5. A smile

Now, this is something that we are all capable of, surely? Women who smile more often are thought to be more positive and happy to potential mates and therefore more attractive. Researchers also found that the whiter a woman’s teeth are, the better. A woman’s peak fertility age might be between the ages of 21 and 30, but don’t worry if you’re still single older than this. Thanks to developments in modern medicine and societal changes, many women are waiting until they are in their mid-to-late 30s, sometimes longer, to have children.

6. Wearing red

It turns out that women in red stimulate a man’s senses and this encourages attraction. So if you’ve still not bought a dress for your New Year’s Eve party, it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to invest in a red one. You’ll not only be more attractive to men, but festive at the same time.

7. Arm length

This might sound like an odd physical characteristic to be attracted to, but there’s a reason why models are so tall. Aside from men being attracted to tall, leggy women, research has proven that men prefer women with long, slender arms too – although they definitely come hand in hand.

8. Overall grooming

It’s a no-brainer, really. If a woman is well-groomed, dresses well and looks healthy, she’ll not only look like a better partner from a physical point of view but a financial one too. Well groomed women are, generally speaking, perceived as being able to look after themselves. While there is no denying that the above research should be taken with a pinch of salt, it can’t hurt to bear it in mind if you’re looking to attract a mate this New Year’s Eve.
