Since Downton Abbey stopped airing each Sunday in 2015, many fans have been left asking themselves, "What is a weekend?"
Lucky for us Crawley fanatics, the British historical drama is finally returning—this time as a feature film.
Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski announced today that Carnival Films will take on the next chapter of the family drama with creator Julian Fellowes writing the screenplay and Brian Percival, the director of the series' pilot, at the production's helm.
Downton Abbey's original run was highly awarded, winning 3 Golden Globes, a Special BAFTA, and 15 Emmys. Understandably, expectations for the film are high.
Although filming is slated to begin within weeks, details of the movie's premise have yet to be revealed. Producers are promising the "original principal cast," but have not specified who that entails.
Assuming Lily James returns, her recent rise to movie stardom in Baby Driver and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again could position Lady Rose at the forefront of the story. (We're guessing casting doesn't include a Jon Snow-esque return for Matthew Crawley or Lady Sybil, but feel free to dream.)
If creators pick up where our characters left off, the Crawley family should be doing quite well. The series' end foreshadowed the eventual decline of the British aristocracy, but much of the family had moved so far away from relying on their status that it shouldn't be too big of a problem.
The historical timeline does align with the eventual spread of the Great Depression, but we should still be quite far off from the beginning of the second world war.
A premiere date has not been announced, but you can catch up or reminisce on Downton Abbey's six seasons via Amazon in the meantime.
