Last month, news broke that Selena Gomez and The Weeknd had ended their 10-month relationship. The split came entirely out of the blue considering there had been no signs suggesting that their relationship was on the rocks.

But what was even more unexpected was what happened soon after the pair’s high-profile breakup. Ever since the split, 25-year-old Selena Gomez has been spotted with her infamous ex-boyfriend 23-year-old Justin Bieber. In fact, they have been seen together on several occasions, prompting many people to speculate that the two have reunited. Could it be that Selena is violating her bestie Taylor Swift’s perfectly reasonable code of conduct when it comes to exes: never ever ever getting back together with them… ever? It certainly looks that way for the famously on-again, off-again couple. Now Selena, who was recently named Billboard‘s ‘Woman of the Year,’ gave a very candid interview with the magazine. She delved into a number of personal topics including her kidney transplant, her relationship with ex-boyfriend The Weeknd, and her notorious relationshipwith Justin Bieber which began way back in 2010 and appeared to end for good in 2015. In fact, Selena was very open about what it was that made her decide to leave their former issues where they belong – firmly in the past. She is so intent on moving on from any past grudges that she is willing to let Justin back into her life. So when the interviewer for Billboard magazine very forthrightly asked Selena “What brought Justin back into your life?”, she didn’t shy away from responding with the genuine and in-depth answer that everyone was hoping for. “I’m 25. I’m not 18, or 19, or 20. I cherish people who have really impacted my life,” she said. “So maybe before, it could have been forcing something that wasn’t right. But that doesn’t mean caring for someone ever goes away.” Selena then went on to name other people who she had either been friends with in her youth or had been linked to in a romantic sense. She said that it feels natural for her to reach out to those who have been in her life since the very beginning of her career in show business.

“And [that goes for] people in general. I mean, I grew up with Demi [Lovato]. Nick and Joe [Jonas] and Miley [Cyrus] — we’ve gone through seasons in our lives. I don’t think it’s as serious as people make things out to be half the time. It’s just my life. I grew up with all of these people, and it’s so cool to see where everybody is. It comes back to the idea of me remaining full. I think a true representation of love is beyond just yourself.”

Interestingly, when Selena began reconnecting with Justin soon after her split with 27-year-old The Weeknd, contrary to what people might think, this did nothing to alienate The Weeknd – whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye. 

Speaking about her relationship with her most recent ex-boyfriend, Selena said, “We ended it as best friends, and it was genuinely about encouraging and caring [for each other], and that was pretty remarkable for me.”

Selena Gomez is a 25-year-old woman and feels more sure of herself and her life choices than ever before. “I’m really proud of where I am right now,” she said. “I handle things in a healthy way. I can enjoy where I’m at.” It takes a strong woman to forgive and forget and move on with her life in the most mature way possible. We’ll never know for sure what exactly happened during her explosive relationship with Justin, but it’s great to see that they’ve finally worked things out. Although it’s certainly been a long process – remember that time Selena reignited her feud with Justin on Instagram after he posted a photo of himself and his then-girlfriend Sophia Richie?! She slammed the ‘Sorry’ singer for putting his girlfriend before his fans. Well, a lot of people don’t know that she actually apologized for what she said, albeit in a very subtle way.
