The Harvey Weinstein scandal has firmly shaken Hollywood and it is only just beginning. In the last couple of days, A-list actresses Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow have joined more than 20 other women by admitting that they were propositioned by the film studio executive early in their careers.
Weinstein is the co-founder of film studio Miramax, and was behind a plethora of critically acclaimed movies such as Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, The Artist, The Lord of the Rings and Good Will Hunting. Thus making him one of the most important people in Hollywood, with unlimited access to aspiring stars who were desperate for that break through role. Aware of the power he held, Weinstein allegedly coerced young actresses into compromising positions, which they agreed to for fear that their career would be over if they did not comply. Now Weinstein’s life is playing out like one of his own movies, he should know that the bad guys always get caught in the end. As allegations against Weinstein continue to flood in, so do claims against other Hollywood big dogs. Most recently, muscleman Terry Crews became an unlikely whistleblower on the scandal. The 49-year-old actor, famous for his rippling muscles, took to Twitter to make claims that he was sexually harassed by a “Hollywood executive” last year. “This whole thing with Harvey Weinstein is giving me PTSD. Why? Because this kind of thing happened to ME,” the White Chicks star wrote, before going into further detail:
“My wife [and] I were at a Hollywood function last year [and] a high level Hollywood executive came over 2 me and groped my privates. Jumping back I said What are you doing?! My wife saw everything [and] we looked at him like he was crazy. He just grinned like a jerk.”
Clearly disconcerted by the unprovoked incident, Crews was ready to take action against the perpetrator. But he realized that by defending himself, he would likely cause an even further scandal in which he would be viewed as the one guilty:
“I was going to kick his ass right then— but I thought twice about how the whole thing would appear. ‘240 lbs. Black Man stomps out Hollywood Honcho’ would be the headline the next day. Only I probably wouldn’t have been able to read it because I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN JAIL. So we left.”
As Crew’s continued to explain his explosive story, it began to echo that of Weinstein’s alleged victims:
“That night and the next day I talked to everyone I knew that worked with him about what happened. He called me the next day with an apology but never really explained why he did what he did. I decided not 2 take it further [because] I didn’t want [to be] ostracized— par 4 the course when the predator has power [and] influence.”
In a defiant stand against predators in the film industry, Crew’s wrote:
“I let it go. I understand why many women who this happens to let it go. Who’s going 2 believe you? (few) What [are] the repercussions?(many) Do u want 2 work again? (Yes) R you prepared 2b ostracized?(No). I love what I do. But it’s a shame and the height of disappointment when someone tries to takes advantage of that. He knows who he is. But sumtimes [you have to] wait & compare notes [with] others who’ve been victimized in order [to gain] a position of strength. I understand and empathize with those who have remained silent. But Harvey Weinstein is not the only perpetrator. (sic)” .
Crews completed his shocking claims by sending a message of support to victims of sexual assault: “Hollywood is not the only business were this happens, and to the casualties of this behavior— you are not alone. Hopefully, me coming forward with my story will deter a predator and encourage someone who feels hopeless.” Crew’s scandalous story instantly gained mass attention online, with messages of support flooding in on the actor’s newsfeed. However, some were quick to suggest that the former American football star name and shame the man who groped him, with one user writing: “Thank you for speaking up but please name this man who probably has taken advantage of other young men. This is why Harvey wasn’t stopped.” In the mean time, the case against Harvey Weinstein is well underway. Watch this video for the latest update:
