After many months of anticipation and waiting, Miley Cyrus's new studio album, , is finally here. The hype surrounding the album has been pretty huge, especially considering how the singer's last major release was her album in 2013 (unless you count , which I don't because it was a surprise and free). Of course, now that the album is available for fans everywhere, people are listening to the new songs and thinking about the meanings behind her lyrics. One major question we all have now is: Who are the lyrics to “I Would Die For You” about?
“I Would Die For You” is the sixth song on ’s track list, and Miley has been teasing song snippets of the album on her social media accounts over the past week as part of a countdown to the release. That being said, the first glimpse of “I Would Die For You” appeared online on Sept. 23 and fans were immediately in love with the ballad. Some say it sounds like vintage Miley, some say it sounds like one of her best songs yet, and others just couldn't wait for the release.
Naturally, now that the song is out in full, fans can appreciate Miley's songwriting talents. The lyrics to “I Would Die For You” are consistent with other lyrics on Cyrus's newest album; in other words, they're obviously meaningful to the singer. Of course, after listening to the deep melodies of the song, it's easy to wonder if they are about Miley's current beau, Liam Hemsworth. In “I Would Die For You,” Miley sings,
Obviously certain lines like “I have your heart, I don't even need your ring ” and “Like the grass, I've watched us grow ” make it seem as if the song was definitely inspired by the singer's relationship with her fiancé (I mean, who else would she write “I Would Die For You” about?); we already know she wrote “Malibu” about her romance with Liam (while riding in an Uber, nonetheless), so it'd be no surprise if this (and many other songs) was about him, too.
This isn't the first time the A-list actor has inspired Miley's music either. In June 2010, ahead of the release of her iconic album , Miley told MTV News Liam was her muse for much of the album. She said,
There are a lot of songs that are about Liam. All of them are about him in a way, but it's also about past relationships that you gotta get over and move on and just about freeing yourself from anything that you feel holds you back.
Miley and Liam have been in an on again/off again relationship with each other since they filmed together in 2009. The two were engaged in 2012, but broke off their plans to marry in 2013. Perhaps a small break is just what they needed since Miley confirmed on Ellen in October 2016 that she and Liam are engaged once again.
At the end of the day, their relationship status is no one's business, but it's great to see them thriving and supporting each other.
certainly has a different sound than Miley's previous collections. Indeed, the singer is clearly exploring new musical territory on this album while at the same time allowing her musical roots to shine through in big ways. One thing is for sure: Whether she's singing a stripped down ballad or a party girl anthem, her sound is never boring.
From the moment the album's first single “Malibu” was released in May of this year, fans were excited to see the country-pop queen return to the music scene with a new sound and a much tamer image (you know, less twerkin' with Robin Thicke and more dancing in poodle skirts). Her performance of the album's title single at the VMAs earlier this year was a major departure from the campy antics we've come to expect from Ms. Cyrus, and it obviously represents her new aesthetic.
