Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Health Summit Was Hilarious, Bizarre, And Utterly Full Of Sh*t

Gwyneth Paltrow took her controversial health and beauty business to New York City last weekend and, yeah, it’s as weird as it sounds.

The 45-year-old actress’s lifestyle brand Goop hosted its one-day event offering all sorts of health treatments and spiritual healing.

Tickets named after trendy herbs and spices, turmeric and ginger, sold for $650 to $2,000 a pop. Around 600 "health" fanatics joined in for the 10 hours of meditation, spa treatments, tarot card and psychic readings, and anti-aging LED face mask treatments.

Panels of medical doctors discussed a variety of topics, ranging from stress and depression to relationship health. Others featured controversial experts with radical ideas, like psychiatrist Dr. Kelly Brogan who, in 2014, posted a now-deleted blog stating HIV doesn’t lead to AIDS despite decades of research stating exactly the opposite.

Other speakers included psychic medium Laura Lynn Jackson who apparently said "death doesn’t exist" and nutritionist Deanna Minich, who told audiences to eat yellow food to "balance your fire" and green food to alleviate grief.

There was, of course, lots of shopping too. But selling things, whether ideas or products, is built into the Goop business model. The subscription-based vitamin regime addresses "your" problems – like why are you so tired all the time or why your genes aren’t like they were in high school – through “health-defining vitamin and supplement regimens” that address the needs of modern women for just $90 a month.

Goop says it addresses the four mind and body issues that plague modern women the most.

“We believe that the little things count, that good food is the foundation of love and wellness, that the mind/body/spirit is inextricably linked and we have more control over how we express our health than we currently understand,” says the website

It’s not the first time Paltrow, or “GP” as her Goopies like to call her, has drawn attention for her questionable beauty routines. The actress was voluntarily stung by bees during an apitherapy treatment for scarring and inflammation. She says it's an ancient form of therapy that has been around for thousands of years but recently fell out of fashion.

Supporters of In Goop Health, which include actresses Drew Barrymore, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Chelsea Handler, say it’s about female empowerment

But some attendees weren’t buying what Goop was selling citing poor, and even dangerous, medical advice, reports Page Six

“We like to shine light on things,” said Paltrow at the event. “We love science and data, and we make a lot of our decisions using data, but we also love the unexplained and unexplored.”
